Fraud prevention and detection wisdom for recruiting UXR study participants

I’m working on a list of fraud prevention and detection wisdom for my UX research students and other researchers as a result of last week’s incredible fraud experience. Today’s edition of our “Fuel Your Curiosity” newsletter includes a draft of this content.

Here is a sample of what’s included (without the details). Please add your thoughts and suggestions and or your name below to get a copy when of it when it’s completed.

In the screening phase

  • Protect your own PII.

  • Provide respondents with "just enough" context about the study upfront.

  • Establish that ID verification will be required.

  • Use a survey platform that captures geolocation and user IP addresses.

  • Do not allow participants to schedule study sessions directly once they’ve qualified through the screener.

  • Fool the guesser.

In the interview phase

  • Begin your session with what seems like small talk but verifies location.

  • Pay attention to environmental clues in audio and video calls.

  • Watch out for money talk.

  • If necessary, cut your losses early in the session.

  • Incentive delivery offers a final chance to verify a suspicious participant.

During data analysis

  • Across participants, look for duplicate responses to open-ended questions.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this knowledge base so far! Again, please add your thoughts or suggestions for this tool below. And your name of you would like to request a copy. I’ll send it out as soon as we’re done.
