Be kind to yourself. Be kind to ALL.

This comic is a great reminder that UX work falls under the “Human Centered Design” umbrella. Regardless of where we are as an industry, let’s never forget the “human” aspect that brings us together.

[HCD is a framework that develops solutions by involving the human perspective throughout the problem-solving process, from observing the problem to implementing the solution, and UX design aligns with HCD by prioritizing user needs, behaviors, and experiences in creating meaningful and relevant products.]

In addition to the shifts in tech industry, employment landscape, the economy, and advent of AI, many in product development, and otherwise, are also struggling in areas that are not as visible.

They may be caring for ill family members or friends, struggling to pay back taxes or navigate legal issues weighing on them financially and emotionally, children struggling personally or academically, housing woes due to forest fires or torrential rain storms, and other unique yet “invisible” challenges (in additional to invisible physical and cognitive differences).

Check in on your friends and colleagues. Ask them how they are “really” doing and if anything else is going on “under the surface.” You may be surprised at what they share, who shares, and who does not.

For those that are not comfortable sharing, you have an opportunity to develop more trust.

It’s not all rainbows and unicorns for those still working or people who seem to “have it all.”

Be kind to yourself. Be kind to ALL.

KINDNESS ALWAYS WINS.
