Why organizations hire external researchers

Q: Organizations hire external design researchers and user researchers? Why?

A: Yes, many hire consulting and independent researchers. Here's why.

If they do NOT have their own researchers on staff they are likely looking to:

a) dip their toe in the water
b) explore a specific question set
c) demonstrate the power of research

If they DO have internal researchers they hire to:

  • Augment team capacity or skillset

  • Work on a “special” project

  • Support a “unique” request/platform/topic

  • Design or augment a new research process

  • Develop and launch a new research learning platform

  • Fill in for someone taking a leave

  • Provide a neutral, non-political perspective

  • Upskill or mentor the existing team

  • Evaluate or enhance a research tool stack

  • Design and hire research team talent and organize the team

Who in my network works as, or with, a UX research consultant or independent UXR? What else would you add to this list?
