Why organizations hire external researchers
Q: Organizations hire external design researchers and user researchers? Why?
A: Yes, many hire consulting and independent researchers. Here's why.
If they do NOT have their own researchers on staff they are likely looking to:
a) dip their toe in the water
b) explore a specific question set
c) demonstrate the power of research
If they DO have internal researchers they hire to:
Augment team capacity or skillset
Work on a “special” project
Support a “unique” request/platform/topic
Design or augment a new research process
Develop and launch a new research learning platform
Fill in for someone taking a leave
Provide a neutral, non-political perspective
Upskill or mentor the existing team
Evaluate or enhance a research tool stack
Design and hire research team talent and organize the team
Who in my network works as, or with, a UX research consultant or independent UXR? What else would you add to this list?
