WHY are you doing this research?
User research goals should be developed in collaboration with stakeholders. The research sessions should not begin until all primary stakeholders agree on the key questions and HOW the learnings will be applied. The questions should be:

  • Specific (well-defined)

  • Actionable

  • Ethical

  • Answerable via user research

  • Complex enough to explore (not have a simple answer)

  • The right size (not too big and not too small)

  • Tied to the organizations key metrics, OKRs or other goals

They should also support core business goals AND pass the “who cares?” test; it will produce interesting answers.

Good research goals include what the research is intended to uncover and for what purpose.
