Valuable UXR focuses on outcomes, not just research output

Valuable user research focuses on outcomes, not just the research output. We discussed various types of impact UX research can have, and different ways to measure it qualitatively and quantitatively, in our “Present with Impact” workshop last night!

Outcome(s) = Growth and/ or Savings

  • A UXR output that can be mapped to growth or savings is one kind of impact.

  • The impact you choose to measure will likely depend on the context of your team, the maturity of the research practice in your organization, and or your goal.

Types of impact include

  • Internal impacts such as product, productivity, business, team/culture, stakeholder, etc

  • External impacts such as end-user, client, industry, shifting social behaviors/norms

Different impacts are measured in different ways, and a single study may have multiple — sometimes unexpected — impacts.

Impacts can be both positive and negative.

How do you measure your UX research or design impact? What impacts do you typically measure? I would love other your thoughts join this topic!
