The best business advice I’ve ever received

Here is the best business advice I ever received. I learned it while working on the Nordstrom product innovation team.

“Never hire anyone you wouldn’t want to have dinner with (regularly).”

The thinking is that you will likely be spending several hours a week, or maybe more than a dozen hours a week, interacting with this person. If you do not think you have enough in common to enjoy a meal together, regularly, you probably won’t enjoy working together either.

Twenty plus years later, I still use this as a barometer to gauge whether I want to enter into a business relationship with someone. It all comes full circle and back to UX! I didn’t realize this then, but the irony is certainly not lost on me now.

What is some of the best advice you’ve received or provided others?
I’d love to hear it!
