My advice to UX research newbies

“If you had to give a newbie in UX research advice on getting started, what would it be?” This was a question asked in a social media group.

One comment asked for clarification in regards to whether the person was seeking responses in regard to conducting UXR, their job search, or understanding UXR as a discipline.

The poster said both.

I thought my response might be helpful to others as well.

Here is a bunch 🙂

  • There is no one right path to enter the field

  • How well you interview is as important as the strength of your case studies and presentation of them

  • Focusing your search on your transferable skills can help tremendously

  • Be prepared to explain your thought process in terms of why you did and didn’t take certain approaches and what you would do differently in the future

  • Know whom you are interviewing. They will seek different levels and types of information from you

  • Define your WHY and prepare a statement as to how your why ties into the highering organization’s mission

  • Research the company

  • Understand their UX maturity, what’s working well and what’s not, and why

  • Find out what type of mentorship and personal Dev funds are available to you

  • Get to know yourself and be authentic to yourself and the people you interview with
