How do you measure your UX research or design impact?

How do you measure your UX research or design impact? What impacts do you typically measure? I'd love to hear diverse thoughts this topic!

Valuable user research focuses on outcomes, not just the research output. We discussed various types of impact UX research can have, and different ways to measure it qualitatively and quantitatively, in our “Present with Impact” workshop this week!

Outcome(s) = Growth and/ or Savings

  • A UXR output that can be mapped to growth or savings is one kind of impact.

  • The impact you choose to measure will likely depend on the context of your team, the maturity of the research practice in your organization, and or your goal.

Consider the different types of impact

  • Internal impacts such as product, productivity, business, team/culture, stakeholder, etc

  • External impacts such as end-user, client, industry, shifting social behaviors/norms

  • Impacts can be both positive and negative

Different impacts are measured in different ways. A single study may have multiple — sometimes unexpected — impacts.

I’m curious to learn:

  • What do you measure in regards to impact?

  • What do you have in place to track impact?

  • How often do you revisit a study to understand its impact?

  • Does your team regularly report on your design and research impact?
