User research discussion guides
Q: What are user research discussion guides and why are they arguably the most important part of a study (along with the research PLAN)?
Guides are a reference tool facilitators use in a 1:1 moderated research interview to:
- Align and achieve research objectives
- Direct the conversation
- Ensure key questions are asked consistently across sessions (to foster pattern recognition)
- Conduct productive sessions for both stakeholders and participants
A guide is like a map comprised of the most important information the facilitator needs to succeed:
- An introduction, mix of question types, follow ups, and a wrap up
- Is organized into sections with rough timing (to ensure key topics are covered)
- May contain branched topics to acquiesce with responses
NOTE: Discussion guides are not to be followed exactly like a script or questionnaire. They are intended to “guide” the moderator in a directed conversation. Skilled moderators deviate to explore pertinent, new and interesting topics participants introduce, in real time, to gather the most effective insights.
