After I published a sketch note that included my spoken goal to create definitions of UX/UI/UXR/Design-related terms that were “so easy my mum could understand it” (detail below), someone contacted the illustrator and said she felt that was a damaging phrase for older women because it implies that mums need things explained to them, which implies that they’re dumb, less important, etc.

I’m taking this comment seriously, but rather than simply act upon my own opinions, I want to practice what I preach and ask for your feedback. You are the audience.

Do you think we should we edit the illustration? Why or why not?

The remark was a factual statement. My mum has long had trouble understanding what I do, not because she’s dumb but instead bc she lacks the context to fully understand this relatively new industry (and our terms). I genuinely want to help her understand it. She is part of the reason I embarked on this mission.

At the same time, in my profession we're well aware that everyone has biases, and we invest A LOT of effort in removing these biases. I certainly do not want to be clueless and help discrimination or derogatory statements persist.

Does perception trump context? Thx for weighing in.
