Evaluative research 101

WIN! This morning I led a private user research workshop on Evaluative Research for a global B2B team headquartered in France. This is the third of seven workshops for this awesome group. I love this team and their opportunity space!

> Evaluative research is an umbrella term for studies in which participants are “evaluating” something such as a storyboard, video, sketch, packaging, a question set, prototype, or even a fully developed live product, service, or interface.

> In this workshop we explore the pros and cons of different approaches, the role discussion guides play, how to author tasks and scenarios, tools and platforms to facilitate evaluative studies, and other topics pertinent to planning and conducting evaluative research including:
>>>> The basics of structuring evaluative research
>>>> How to create your own research brief and discussion guide for evaluative studies
>>>> A framework and support to create these materials

The workshop included three Evaluative studies for workshop participants to experience a hybrid card sort, tree test, and five-second test in two different platforms.

Here are some slides from my presentation deck. I hope they inspire you to think about your evaluative user research, planning, tools, and platforms with a new perspective!

In addition, Joel Barr is our Ask Like A Pro Alumni Mixer guest tonight!! His presentation and activities will focus on quantitative approaches to user research (eye-tracking, stress testing, tree jacks, clickstream analysis, time on task, click counts, task completion rates, A/B testing, multivariate testing, and more.) What a terrific day!! This event is open to all current students and alumni.
