The profound impact AI could have on the future User Research

No, I’m not worried about AI taking over my role as a qualitative researcher and educator. I am, however, concerned about the 2022/2023 tech industry layoffs impact on our immediate professional lives. And I’m increasingly concerned about the ripple effects on our industry’s future, especially regarding User Research.

It's disheartening to see some super-talented User Researchers (those aspiring to break into the field, people with decades of experience, and those in between), feeling compelled to exit the industry. This has ignited a spark in me to talk about a growing issue - the potential dwindling of the talent pipeline.

The next generation of User Researchers may inadvertently be losing interest in UXR. What happens when there's a lack of fresh, innovative minds to propel our field forward? To represent different points of view? To grow into and take over current management positions?

I've seen/read many conversations about the hiring challenges and individuals pivoting away from UX. But what we talk about far less is the profound impact this could have on the future of our profession.

As a user research educator and mentor, as well as a consultant and hiring manager, I worry.

Why arent we talking about this aspect?
What implications do you think this may have?
I'd love to hear your thoughts.
