Survey/Screen and FEAST

There's no dancing around the COVID-19 elephants in the room. Whatever coping mechanisms you choose are fine with me. I'm not going to judge you, or yours, walking in the background of a Zoom in your jammies. Hey, I'm trying to deliver on my consulting client work, roll out my Curiosity Tank workshops and home school a six year old that makes me look lazy and unemployed! Balancing all of this stuff is super confusing and hard.

I'm sending you well wishes while thinking about the many ways people are impacted and our opportunities to further our empathy skills.

A gift for you! A student postponed at the last minute for this week's Survey/Screen class so we're offering

a 30% discount for one lucky person
to fill that one seat!

Survey/Screen

There's a caveat though - you need to be available for at least an hour today to get up to speed and prepare. I'll walk you through some pre-work, share some sample surveys, and provide you with a survey topic if you don't have one (@ 30 minutes via Zoom). Then you need to read through the sample surveys and begin to draft a PLAN by populating the template I will share with you (@ 30 minutes on your own).

What will you get out of the class? We will focus on how to gather actionable feedback via surveys and screeners

  • Learn how to write, distribute and leverage surveys and screeners to achieve your research goals

  • Identify who to recruit, where, how to maximize the number of responses

  • Understand the pros and cons of different question types and when to use which ones

  • Design question sequences to move from surface data gathering to deeper understanding

  • Explore piping, branching and other techniques to gather the most pertinent information in the shortest amount of time

  • You will takeaway a well drafted research survey or screener to gather feedback on, execute, and or use in your portfolio.

Our next class, called INTERVIEW,
is scheduled for the morning
of May 1st and 2nd PST

Speaking of interviews, here is a terrific podcast about asking the right questions and digging deeper. "Live In The Feast" is a seasonal podcast. Each season has theme specific and each episode features a guest who's been there before and achieved success.

Jason Resnickthe host, and I are in a mastermind group together. He is an amazing talent, inspiration and all around great person! This podcast includes many takeaways for you to improve your "ask" right here and right now.

Behzod Sirjani, my amazing Slack colleague and client, started a terrific effort to help UX Researchers who have been affected by COVID-19 layoffs. Researchers For Hire is a resource where those affected can share their information and hiring managers can find them.

This quote from Robby Kwok, who runs Stack's People Ops, stopped me in my tracks.

“You are not working from home;
you are at your home during
a crisis trying to work.”

Support results

Last month I asked "How can I support you?" and provided some ideas to help you, our Curiosity Tank community. The Slack Channel was the winner followed up by the Remote Listening/Observation Activity so we've added these to our to do list!. Stay tuned.

Panel discussion...

On March 3rd Curiosity Tank sponsored a panel discussion called “What I wish I knew before starting a career in user research.” Over 700 people registered! The discussion was tailored to academic researchers transitioning to industry user experience research roles; however, it's helpful for anyone looking to learn more about the industry.

If you missed it, here is the video replay/recording and a slew of resources. And I mean a BOATLOAD of resources.
