Dare to dream big! AND GO FOR IT!

I just had a terrific conversation with a UXR colleague navigating a recent layoff. She worked in the role for nearly six years. Having worked alongside her for nearly two of those six years I can personally vouch for her incredible talent, awesomeness, and dedication. Now, she's contemplating a significant career pivot, possibly leaving corporate America to either launch her own business or explore civic tech.

This discussion evolved into entrepreneurship among applied researchers. I’ve often wondered (and have asked many of you!) why entrepreneurship isn't more common in our field, especially given the unique insights and skills we possess(!?!)

We talked about what it takes to be an entrepreneur. It's not just about having enough $$$. IMO, and from my experience as an entrepreneur for 12 years, success in starting your own business hinges on several key factors:

  1. A Clear Vision: Knowing what you aim to achieve.

  2. The Right Mindset: Being mentally prepared for the ups and downs.

  3. Passion: Loving what you do.

  4. Drive: The relentless pursuit of your goals.

  5. Openness to Advice: Seeking and applying feedback from others.

  6. Commitment to Start: Taking that crucial first step, regardless of the scale.

  7. Courage: Facing the unknown with bravery.

  8. Discipline: Staying on track despite numerous distractions and challenges.

Notice how many of these are soft skills? And relate to EQ?

Starting an entrepreneurial journey is a testament to courage, vision, and commitment. Sometimes it is born out of necessity, other times it’s a long sought-after dream that becomes reality.

My journey began as an exploration with no business plan or clear vision. But I had the rest. I figured things out as I progressed and I'm still figuring things out. *Nothing is static*. *Everything changes over time.* I developed Marie Florio's "Everything is Figureoutable" mindset. If you haven't read her book yet, I recommend it if you are stuck, regardless of where you are or where you want to go.

To my fellow researchers considering this path, know that your unique capabilities set you up for success far beyond the confines of traditional employment! And in many ways, researchers have MORE skills to prepare you for this journey than most.

I don't know who needs to hear this now >> Dare to dream big! AND GO FOR IT!

I am cheering you on from the sidelines ;)
